Useful Tips For Storage
It is important to do the necessary preparations and pack your items well for storage. Our useful tips for storage will help you get the best out of the space you are renting and ensure easy access to the items you have stored in the container.
- Get your entire packing materials ready in one place. You would need cardboard boxes, permanent markers, parcel tape, bubble wrap, labels, scissors etc. This will save you a lot of time packing. Bear in mind it is often better to buy sturdier, more expensive boxes that you will be able to stack in the storage unit thus minimizing the space you need.
- When packing, label each box clearly on a side that is going to be visible after stacking the boxes. Make sure the labels state clearly the contents of each box.
- Make sure you wrap well and protect all of your delicate belongings. Label clearly those boxes and make sure they are stacked on top of heavier, more sturdy boxes containing less delicate items.
- Pack heavy items in smaller or individual boxes. This will prevent injury while lifting and make the process of moving your boxes more manageable. It is best if your boxes are filled to capacity. This will make them sturdier when stacked. It is often better to use smaller boxes rather than large as weight might become an issue.
- If you are storing freezers, fridges or washing machines make sure you drain and wash them a few days before storing. Ensure they are dry. It is best to leave the door open for a couple of days. You do not want these items getting smelly and mouldy inside your storage space. You can then save room by filling those clean fridges with items.
- Use a wardrobe box for your clothes if you want them to retain their shape. For the rest of your clothes you could use vacuum bags that would protect them and make their size compact.
- When your items are moved in, it is advisable you cover them with a dustsheet to keep them clean and protected.
- Be mindful about placement. Create an aisle down the centre of your storage unit and place items along the walls. Ensure you can reach easily all of your belongings if you need them. Do not forget to place boxes with the labels being visible.
- Have a plan what goes where. It makes sense to keep frequently needed items at the front of your storage unit. You may want to have a drawn map that you keep in the unit that tells you what is where. This is especially useful if you are not using the storage container alone.
- Keep some basic tools at hand in your container like screwdrivers, pliers and a hammer.
